More snow arrives in central Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN) -- The Ohio State Highway Patrol has shut down a 10 mile stretch of I-70 east of Columbus between MM 115 and MM 125 due to icy conditions.

Several counties in central Ohio have declared snow emergencies after the latest round of winter weather.

Level 1: Clark, Coshocton, Delaware, Fairfield, Licking, Logan, Madison, Muskingum, Richland, Ross, Vinton

Level 2: Athens, Champaign, Hardin, Hocking, Guernsey, Fayette, Jackson, Knox, Marion, Morrow, Muskingum, Perry, Pickaway, Pike, Scioto, Union

Level 3: Crawford

LEVEL 1: Roadways are hazardous with blowing and drifting snow. Roads may also be icy. Motorists are urged to drive very cautiously.

LEVEL 2: Roadways are hazardous with blowing and drifting snow. Roads may also be very icy. Only those who feel it is necessary to drive should be out on the roads. Contact your employer to see if you should report to work. Motorists should use extreme caution.

LEVEL 3: All roadways are closed to non-emergency personnel. No one should be driving during these conditions unless it is absolutely necessary to travel or a personal emergency exists. All employees should contact their employer to see if they should report to work. Those traveling on the roads may subject themselves to arrest.

130 ODOT snow plows are plowing and salting interstates, state routes and US routes in Central Ohio.

ODOT crews say the snow fell quickly and the roads are snow covered. They want you to slow down and give the plows room to work.

The challenge with this storm is the freezing temperatures and strong winds.
Rural counties are expecting to experience blowing snow long after it stops falling.

The crews that are in now work until noon today and then fresh crews come in from noon-midnight. ODOT anticipates drivers will have to work 12-hour shifts much of the weekend.

With temperatures well below freezing, ODOT mixes beet juice or calcium chloride with salt to make the salt more effective. When roadways are wet, there’s always potential for icy conditions.
