Ohioans flocking to warm-weather spots

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN) -- This winter’s icy cold and snow have more Ohioans escaping to warm-weather destinations.

"They have been heading to warm weather destinations more so than in years past," said AAA Ohio's Kimberly Schwind.

While some have been planning last-minute winter getaways or spring break trips, others have been making summer vacation plans. Regardless of when people are traveling, many are flocking to the Caribbean, Mexico and Florida.

"AAA travel experts report a 29 percent increase in the number of people booking trips to the Caribbean and Mexico this year, compared to last year," said Schwind.

Cruising and all-inclusive resorts are among the top travel spots.

During January, AAA Ohio reported eight out of the top 10 driving destinations were to Florida. Orlando, Fla. topped that list and remains one of the three most popular driving destinations throughout the year.

As cruising remains a popular vacation choice, many of the other popular Florida destinations are cruise ports, including Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Tampa.
