Zoo ditches plans to add a downtown location

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN) -- The Columbus Zoo is scrapping plans to build a downtown location.

"We heard the voters loud and clear," said zoo president and CEO Tom Stalf.

He says that doesn't mean that the zoo won't continue outreach programs or other ways to engage the community.

"As far as building a satellite campus down at the Scioto Peninsula - that is not happening," he said.

The zoo will be coming back to voters after they rejected a levy in May that would have doubled the amount collected from Franklin County voters and would have made the levy permanent.

"What we also heard from voters is that they do not want a continual levy and that is off as well," he said.

Stalf said any future levy request would only last for 10 years, but how much they'd be asking voters to approve is yet to be determined.
